One who is leveraging branding to the max is Aliza Licht, 40, the senior vice president for global communications at Donna Karan International, who is better known as DKNY PR GIRL. Ms. Licht has parlayed her half a million-plus Twitter followers into speaking engagements, like at a TEDx conference in 2013 (TED and its ilk being essential pit stops for New Mentors) and a deal with Grand Central Publishing for a book to be published in May titled, “Leave Your Mark: Land Your Dream Job, Kill It in Your Career, Rock Social Media.” The cover image shows a Starbucksish coffee cup with a lipstick print. To Women’s Wear Daily, Ms. Licht unequivocally called the book-to-be a “mentorship.” And if your dream job has nothing to do with clothes? No problem.

"It's definitely another barricade to jump over when you're applying," she admits, but you can genuinely — and persuasively — reframe your skill set. For all of us, there is hope.

In 2009, DKNY publicist Aliza Licht launched the Twitter handle for Donna Karan’s offshoot fashion brand. Inspired by the anonymous, fly-on-the-wall narrator of TV’s Gossip Girl, she began tweeting as@DKNY PR Girl. It was a smart move that instantly turned just another brand feed into one that felt personal and engaging. “People started following because it was one of the first examples of humanizing a brand,” explains Licht. “It was an insider peek into all the fun things we do here, from celebrity dressing to Fashion Week.”

THE TWITTER PRO (AND NEWLY MINTED AUTHOR!) ON WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER STAGE AN INSTAGRAM.
"She watches Scandal with you every Thursday (red wine and popcorn at the ready, commenting on every move Liv and her gladiators make in way less than 140 characters), reassures you that, yes, moving to New York to pursue your dream career is indeed a great idea, shares the daily gossip (annoying ‘To Whom It May Concern’ emails and all), and delivers straight-to-the-point outfit feedback. "If she could, Aliza Licht would like to take you for coffee. She’d tell you all about her decision to switch gears in college, drop her pre-med courses, and pursue a career in fashion. And, she’d hold nothing back in relaying her experience busting her butt for a high-profile fashion magazine right out of college, never quitting despite some less-than-stellar bosses. But, should Licht actually schedule coffee dates with her more than 500,000 Twitter followers, it’s safe to assume that she’d have very little time left for her job as the senior vice president of global communications at Donna Karan — or, as most know her, DKNY PR Girl. So, Aliza did the next best thing and wrote all her advice down..."

Followers of fashion likely follow DKNY PR GIRL (@dkny), the famous Twitter persona developed by Aliza Licht, the voice of Donna Karan and DKNY, who has more than 500,000 followers.
Licht is among the best-known pioneers of fashion-related social media. But what she found along the way of building her reputation, and her fan base, was that her followers not only wanted to know about fashion, but also, and just as much, were interested in navigating the working world.
Now, in her new mentorship-focused book, “Leave Your Mark: Land Your Dream Job. Kill It In Your Career. Rock Social Media,” ($26; Grand Central Publishing) with a foreword by Donna Karan, Licht delivers a sassy guide to the contemporary working world – where much like with social media – personal and professional lines are blurred.
It’s both for newbies and established types looking to be better communicators of their personal brand. A fun, fresh read written in the beloved tone that has earned Licht her huge following. It’s available for pre-order now at amazon.com and will hit the shelves at bookstores on May 5.

"If you’re the sort of feminist who thinks we don’t have time to worry about lipstick, give this one a swerve: the biog on Licht’s book tells us she ‘lives for the perfect red carpet moment’. But despite her being a US fashion PR, Leave Your Mark is far from looks-obsessed. If anything, it’s business obsessed - a sassy, chatty and very American look at how to get the career you want. Some of the advice - “Intern like a Rock Star” - may not quite translate to the average UK office, but the tone and the mindset largely do. It encourages the kind of go-getter mentality that is so applauded and indeed assumed in men, but does it with a friendly almost relentless positivity that can’t help but make you smile."
